I am a money grubbing capitalist pig, but actually not very good it. I am 20 lbs overweight, but go the gym reasonably often. I have absolutely no concept of how hard the things I want to do are…until I have agreed to do them. I've got a couple of adult kids who live far away and a career that has me sitting at a desk all day. Things is like: baseball, a really good gin & tonic, my convertible, and warm weather. Things I am not so keen on: heights, overpriced food and having nothing to do.

The Stadium Tour Continues

On August 22, 2018August 22, 2018 By StevenIn Baseball, Travel, Uncategorized1 Comment

Last weekend I did my solo road trip to Pittsburgh, another stop in the grand tour of baseball stadiums. 500 miles each way, give or take a bit. I left around Friday noon, looking forward to a sunshine filled afternoon drive to Cleveland. Unfortunately, the weather gods decided to toy with me. It rained on …

What is in a Name?

On August 15, 2018August 15, 2018 By StevenIn Travel, Uncategorized1 Comment

I know that I have said it before, but I love to drive.   Put me out on the open road with the top down, good music, good company, and an interesting destination, and I am as happy as can be. During our trip out west, I noticed that lots of the highways have been named after people.  …

Going Solo

....around the world in a rowboat.  Ok, maybe not that far, but I am taking a solo weekend trip (I am so sad --as far as Steven knows) to Pittsburgh in a couple of weeks.  It is part of the baseball stadium tour that I am doing with my son and we're meeting there for …

More Oddities from Our Trip Out West

On July 26, 2018 By StevenIn Travel, UncategorizedLeave a comment

America is the land of mass marketing.  We are all used to the plethora of junk emails, the fact that the only thing we get in the mail are bills and marketing materials, the huge billboards on the side of the highways and cutesy, if somewhat odd, (deranged?), names that businesses use.  I sometimes wonder …

The MLB All-Star Game

On July 21, 2018 By StevenIn Relationships, Travel, UncategorizedLeave a comment

My son and I left early to get to the game.  It started at 8 p.m., but we wanted to be there when the gates opened at 4:30--p.m., of course.  We drove to the Greenbelt Metro stop and took the train from there to the stadium.  Given the uncertainties of the drive and the train …

Who needs to plan ahead?

On July 13, 2018 By StevenIn Relationships, Travel, UncategorizedLeave a comment

I know, this posting is two days late.  I am sorry, I've been otherwise occupied and simply haven't had the time to get this one done. When we last left off our  intrepid travelers, they had just returned home from a two-week, all-fun vacation to the outer reaches of Utah.  Exhausted and elated, they set …

By the numbers

One of the pleasures of a long road trip is that we rack up lots of interesting numbers along the way....at least I think they are interesting.   Here is a summary of our trip...in numbers: Days: 17 Miles: 4,611 States driven in: 10 (IL, MO, OK, TX, NM, AZ, UT, CO, NE, IO) National …

On the Road (to Skokie)

On July 1, 2018July 1, 2018 By StevenIn Travel, Uncategorized1 Comment

Today was our first day on the drive home.  We woke and breakfast in Moab at 4000 feet, the weather at 8 a.m. was 87 degrees on the way to an estimated high of 97.  We had a great last breakfast at the B&B, packed up the car, put the top down and were on …

Playing in the Devils Garden

Who in their right mind thought that getting up at 5 a.m. (in the morning!) to go hiking would be a good idea?  Oh yeah, I guess it was my idea...Sue should know better than to listen to me!  Last night, we decided that we wanted to do the Devils Garden loop hike in Arches …

A Whole Raft of Experiences

On June 27, 2018 By StevenIn Relationships, Travel, Uncategorized1 Comment

We just finished our two-day whitewater rafting trip down the Colorado River through Cataract Canyon into Lake Powell. We planned this months ago, but the timing was perfect. We needed a break from all the hiking in the heat and two days on the water was perfect. Cataract Canyon is part of Canyonlands National Park …
